Do Heat Pumps Use Renewable Energy? The Environmental Heating Solution

The straight answer is yes. Heat Pumps use renewable energy sources from aerothermal, geothermal or hydrothermal heat. However, that is not enough. They also need help from another suitable energy source, such as electricity or gas, to operate.

So if heat pumps don’t rely entirely on renewable energy are they still environmentally friendly? Again, we will have to say yes. They require very little auxiliary energy to run which makes them not only a greener alternative to other types of heating/cooling systems but also a very cost-effective solution.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Heat Pumps draw energy from the environment to then transfer it into the heating system. This process is the exact opposite to that of a refrigerator, which absorbs energy from inside to then transfer it to the outside.

One of the main advantages of heat pumps is that you can use it all year round since their heating cycle can be fully reversed. During the colder months, you can use it to cool your property.

The Different Types of Heat Pumps

There are currently two types of heat pumps on the market and both of them produce much less CO2 than any traditional heating system.

Air source: as the name states, air source heat pumps absorb heat from the air. You will find that the heat generated can be used in many ways such as in the form of hot water, heating radiators and even underfloor heating. This environmentally-friendly solution requires very little maintenance and can reduce your energy bills significantly.

Geothermal source: on the other hand, this type of heat pumps draws energy from the ground. Much like the air source ones, they are a green cost-effective solution. However, they are more effective when used to produce a lot of warmth rather than heat a small area. Therefore, the ground heat pumps can be a better investment for larger properties with good insulation in place.
